COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. It was first described in 2019 in Wuhan city (Hubei province) and eventually spread to become the global COVID-19 pandemic. (source)

Key facts
Most people infected with the virus experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without further treatment. However, some can become seriously ill, especially older people and people with underlying medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer are at higher risk. Anyone can get infected with COVID-19 and people of any age can become seriously ill or even die.(1)
